It's gettin' a little Indiana Jones up in here! (January 6, 2017)

Well this week just zipped by.

Monday brought a few car troubles but now I know how to effectively
fill a tire with a slightly jacked up hubcap with air
#sistermissionarypower

Tuesday I went on exchanges with Sister Winward and we were working in
the YSA Ward! We did a ton of knocking but we found this really cool
girl who goes to Sierra College. Ames Juliet. She let us in out of the
pouring rain and we started to tell her who we are and what we do. She
apparently is from Brazil but her family let her go to school in
Illinois right by Nauvoo! She even knew what Carthage jail was and
everything! She has a little bit of a Catholic background and feels
like God is there. We left her with the Book of Mormon and a challenge
to read. So cool right?! For all those of you missionaries who are
reading this: TRACTING WORKS (sometimes). At least we're proving our
diligence and putting our faith in the Lord and that He will place
those who are ready in our path. Also, that day we had a first lesson
with their new investigator Ricky. He is dating a member and she came
and another guy from the ward came. We taught and testified that we
have a Father in Heaven who wants to answer our questions. He loves us
enough to give us prophets and priesthood power. All we have to do is
search, ponder, and pray to ask if it is all true.

Wednesday brought more knocking. Ran into a non member who a lady in
our ward is trying to fellowship. Didn't know it until Sister
Hutchinson brought it up and then we were all like, "I hope we made a
good impression on her (the non member) while we were chit chatting
with her". You never know who's watching, people.

Surprise surprise, Thursday brought more knocking as well. We tracted
a couple streets in the Rocklin 1st ward area. On one court we found
several people who we think legitimately want to have us back! Stay
tuned folks. Had a great lesson with Brother Mondell. It's cool to see
how when you really focus on the Book of Mormon, answers come. We're
just helping him realize what some of his answers are because he is a
very analytical person. He's gonna get it we just know it!

Friday was weekly planning and more contacting.

On Saturday we had a lesson with Brother Mondell's son! I guess he was
the first one to official start taking the missionary discussions. We
kind of took some time to find out where he was at and what all he
knows. He straight up said to us that he feels like he knows the
history of the church more than the principles behind it. Like wut.
This kid is so smart and we are way excited to teach him and really
help him understand those foundational principles of our gospel. High
hopes for this family.

On Sunday we had a couple of people to church as well!! I just love
how much fellowshipping goes on within the ward. Everyone is on the
look out at church to have the chance to reach out and say hello to
people they don't know. I feel like that would be a fun calling, just
to be a sacrament meeting greeter who gets to know everyone and their
stories. Everyone just needs to feel loved and accepted once they
enter the church building.

We went on a mini Indiana Jones adventure today. We checked out the
tomb of Joel Parker Whitney!! He founded a bunch of stuff out here so
thought we might check it out. Pics included.

This week I had the thought of "I'm getting a little bit tired". Right
after that thought I told myself, "but I gotta keep going." I know we
all have times that we are just exhausted, mentally, spiritually,
physically. But I also know that the Savior is the source of energy
and living water. Whenever I remember my calling as a missionary and a
representative of Jesus Christ I feel a sudden boost of energy come
into me. By myself I wouldn't be able to push through being tired.
With Him, I have the strength I need to spread this gospel. That's
what we all get to experience as members of the church. We are never
to be weary in well-doing and I believe the way we do it is by
centering all of our works on the Savior.

Thus begins BIRTHDAY week!!! We'll find some way to celebrate me not
being a teenager anymore. This should be fun :)

Hope everyone's week is the bomb,
Sister Thorum

MLC party crashers (January 9, 2017)

Welp. This week definitely didn't go as planned but it was
sufficiently awesome.

Monday began with loads of volleyball. Needless to say, I was in heaven.

Tuesday brought interviews with President Marston!!  Man I love that
guy. We talked about transfers, mission rules, changes coming up, a
future eternal companion, Emergen-C, and lots more. Later on in the
evening we had a lesson with our investigator Chad. We taught more
about the Book of Mormon and committed him to come to church. He said
he had been looking at a few different churches and that if he wasn't
working he would come! He ended up not showing but I have faith that
one day it will work out.

Wednesday brought quite a bit of knocking doors. But I'm tellin ya,
tracting brings miracles. We were looking for this one former
investigator but she wasn't home. We decided to knock a couple of the
doors around her and we ran into the sweetest lady!! Her name is
Janelle (like not with the normal J sound but with a French sounding
J). She is into all kinds of TV shows and movies and gave us the whole
plot lines of not just one, but several Supernatural episodes. We
talked a little bit about the plan of salvation and what the purpose
of this life is. We set up another time with her to share more! Gah
lee I just love humble folk.

Thursday brought a new adventure: MLC (mission leadership conference)!
I'm not an STL but my companion is and President asked that I come up
as well. I felt a little bit like the freshman sitting in the senior
section, but I also felt pretty special. It was a day full of cinnamon
rolls and claps. We got to study a lot more about the Restoration and
why it is so important in what we teach. I could feel the spirit
testify so strongly of the reality of a living prophet on the earth
today, Thomas S. Monson. I know that because Heavenly Father loves all
of His children, He gave us a prophet in these the last days to lead
and direct the Church according to the instruction of the Lord. Later
that night we had a lesson with Brother Mondell. We normally study out
of the Book of Mormon and bring up any questions or insights that we
had as we read. (Side not: it's amazing what a tool of revelation the
Book of Mormon is if you let it be). The subject turned to repentance
and forgiveness. Through a series of questions we found out that
Brother Mondell doesn't know what full forgiveness feels like. We went
through all of the steps of repentance and he said that he had never
considered asking God for forgiveness. He understood the whole saying
sorry and working to make hints right again, by never to purposefully
ask God to forgive him. We challenged him to do just that. There's a
lot of praying going on that he notices the difference, the weight
that is lifted as he truly repents. I know that through repentance we
can come to know that God is there because he makes it possible for
all traces of guilt to be swept away. He knows how to succor us if we
let him.

Friday was fairly mellow. Planned for another bomb week this week.

Saturday consisted of seeing some less actives and just getting out to
meet people.

Sunday was a blur of 7 1/2 hours of meetings and church. We did have 4
investigators to church though!!

This week we really tried to earn our pillows! I didn't take many
pictures but made a goal to be better at that. So here's a selfie of
Sister Winward and I on p-day.

Love,
Sister Thorum

P.s. Mighta kinda sorta hit my 7 month mark this week.... #gettinold

THIS TIME NEXT YEAR I'LL BE HOME (January 2, 2017)

Lol but really though I'm down to less than a year!! Man being a
missionary is the bomb. This week I think I finally learned the true
definition of knocking doors, because literally almost all of our set
appointments fell through. I have never started so many random sorta
gospely conversations in. my. life. It's actually really fun though!
You get to meet awesome random people and start talking with them. You
get to sometimes find out things they would normally never tell people
that they literally just met two seconds ago. They either tell you
about how they are not interested or they appreciate what we do or
tell us to come back another time OR they are genuinely interested in
what we have to say. It's awesome when people realize that we are just
regular teenage kids trying to love and serve and share what has
changed our lives.

Among those we knocked into this week we have a Southern Baptist man
with a creepy butler dummy holding Christmas candy on his front porch
(unfortunately I didn't get to grab any before we had to scurry away),
a Lutheran lady who loves prayer and gave us these massive orange
looking fruit things called canarans(?), a woman who wanted to shoo us
away quickly but not before I quickly passed a Book of Mormon through
to her to maybe, JUST MAYBE read one day, and a very nice man from
Wales. Gotta love Cali.

Our coolest lesson this week came from the Lutheran lady who gave us
organic funky fruit. Her son opens the door and immediately knows that
his mom would do better in this conversation than he would (or maybe
we were just a little too scary :). She comes to the door and tells us
about how she has recently found God and that it's changes her life.
BINGO (here's where we tend to go off of what they already know and
build on their faith in Christ!). I bring up a scripture from the Book
of Mormon and she seems to believe at first that we don't consider the
Bible scripture. Lol don't tell that to my freshman year seminary
teacher. I share Helaman 5:12 and it lines up with all the things she
is telling us about how she feels like we in our day are in spiritual
warfare and that when we rely on Christ we can't go wrong. THEN she
tells us a really cool experience she had with prayer a little while
previous to this. She could feel the influence of the spirit so
strong! Now at this point she's getting a little antsy to get us off
her hands, but I felt prompted to leave a chapter of the Book of
Mormon with her. It's Enos 1 and it talks about how a prophet prayed
for hours on end, pleading with the Father to forgive him and to bless
him and his people and even his enemies. Her interest seemed a little
piqued. We gave her the Book and she said she might someday read it. I
don't know that we'll be back in the next little bit because she
seemed pretty set in her ways, but the spirit was definitely there to
testify that the Book of Mormon and the Bible are true and that they
testify of a Heavenly Father and a Savior who love us. I know that the
Book of Mormon contains THE fullness of Christ's everlasting gospel. I
know that if you read and ponder and pray about its words, you can
come to know the truthfulness of them too.

On Saturday we got to go up to Marysville and Yuba City for a baptism
that Sister Smith was involved in from her previous area. A lot of
that area is definitely not as well to do as Rocklin and it reminded
me of the good ole days in Antelope! Man I loved it. It's just
interesting the wide gamut of people I get to work with over the span
of a year and a half. And I get to love ALL of them! (Well, most of
the time...)

Thank you everyone who sent Christmas cards and gifts!! I hope I got
everyone on my thank you card list so if I didn't, call me out ok? I
hope everyone had a happy and safe Christmas and New Years!!! We
toasted our Martinelli's to ring in the new year. Now time to get to
setting some goals!! Get to it y'all!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Love,
Sister Thorum

Dude! You got your eyebrows shredded?! (December 26, 2016)

So we found coupons the other day for eyebrow threading and so we
thought eh, what the heck why not go get them done today. (It hurt
quite a little bit btw). Anyways, so I walk into the church gym and
proclaim the adventure we went on and one elder thought I said that we
got our eyebrows shredded. It will from here on out always come to my
mind that we go out to get our eyebrows shredded.

Welp. Christmas has come and gone and I almost don't know what to do
with myself. Good thing today is p-day so I have time to recover from
the emotional roller coaster I went on this weekend.

Tuesday was the bomb diggity because we were able to teach a lesson to
a guy named David who the sisters had helped move before I got here.
We knocked and he opened up saying that he isn't normal home at this
time of day but that he had some special training that morning that
let him out early. (Hint: Heavenly Father knows His children and there
isn't such a thing as a coincidence on a mission ;) We taught him
about the Book of Mormon and we challenged him to begin reading it. He
asked where he should begin and everything! I'm excited to see where
this goes!

We had a lot of other appointments fall through this week what with
people going out of town or, let's be honest, straight up forgetting.
Then, the winter cold fairy made a stop at my place and I was down for
the count for a bit. But life is good and, as always the motto is
"Onward and Upward!"

We taught a lesson to this one lady named Rachel who recently moved
from China. She welcomes us in and proceeds to tell us alllll about
her and her family. She had so many questions all revolving around how
our church is different from all the other Christian churches out
there. We got to explain to her about the Book of Mormon and the
priesthood power and all kinds of things! We don't know exactly how
interested she is in potentially joining the church, but it's cool to
help her understand what we believe and invite her to make small
changes in her life in order to come closer to Christ!

Christmas Eve was a party maaaaaan! We started off the morning at the
Lindsay family's house. They fed us delicious Christmas Eve waffles
and then we jammed out! I need to pick up the uke or somethin out
here. I gotta step up my game.

We also did caroling as a zone and it was really cool. We got to hand
out Light the World cards and show the video to a few people as well!
We kinda frozed our lil butts off, but it was worth it.

Had dinner with the Smurthwaite family and they are seriously the
bomb. They included us in their live nativity and everything.
Kiersten, you should room with their daughter Kirsten out at BYU :)

CHRISTMAS WAS AWESOME! Well, except for dinner cancelling on us that
night :) we went to both sacrament meetings and listened to all the
fun Christmas music. Luckily, both bishops invited us over to dinners
and hangouts and stuff like that (so don't worry, we were taken care
of). After church we went home and grabbed a quick lunch before we
FACETIMED OUR FAMILIES! Needless to say that I bawled my eyes out. It
was so good to see my fam jam!! The girls are looking like ladies and
it's freakin me out. I luckily left the FaceTime conversation feeling
a little emotional drained but supported and very loved. The net
little five month stretch is bound to go by in no time :) We went for
fondue at Bishop Brasher's house and crazy wonderful kids. Then we
went to the Lincoln sister's apartment to see everyone :) (Ooh and
someone made the best eggnog milkshakes I have ever had in my life).
We finished off the night at Bishop Johnson's house and listened to
the mini Christmas concert they had going on. I'm talkin cellos, ukes,
chimes, accordions, and much more.

I am determined to treat everyday like Christmas!! I would invite
everyone to figure out what your gift to Christ is going to be this
coming year. I'm going to come up with my own little list of things I
can do to always honor the babe born in Bethlehem. I promise that as
we all try to be a little more focused on Christ, we will find
ourselves transformed into much more selfless people. I've learned
that I am happiest when I take the focus off of myself and onto others
and my Savior.

LOVE,
Sister Thorum

I refused to let this be a normal transfer week. (December 19,2016)

So normally the week right after transfers is suuuuppppeeerrrr long
and kinda bumpy cause you have so many new adjustments. Well, that
wasn't going to happen on my watch. Sister Smith came ready to work!!
We set to it and this week we found three new investigators. They were
all found three investigators! All of them were found through members.
There is just a special fire going in Rocklin about missionary work.
We are called to teach repentance and baptize converts and that is
what we're gonna do man!!

The Mondells are doing about the same but we gave them some
challenging commitments so we're hoping those help us make some more
progress.

OK I HAVE NEWS EVERYBODY!! TAMMY IS ON DATE FOR FEBRUARY 4TH!! She
called me one night and here was great rejoicing to be heard in the
land round about.

I'm so excited for Christmas to come up this next week. I love my
family so much I can't stand it! Sorry this weeks email was very short
but hopefully I'll have more time next Monday! 5 points to whoever can
find Sister Vaitohi and me on the mission Christmas card the fastest!

So in our mission the mission President wanted each companionship to send a picture of themselves with their Christmas trees to compile
into a giant mission Christmas card to send everywhere. Naturally,  Sister Thorum is super excited and proceeds to dig out the Christmas tree that's hidden in the apartment closet somewhere. Imagine the disappointment when she pulled out a Christmas tree that was all of about a foot tall. She was not about to take a picture next to that sad little sculpture of wires wrapped in pipe cleaners, so she decided to take action and find one of the coolest trees in the ward to take a picture with. Needless to say, Sister Wycoff comes in clutch. Stay tuned for the mission Christmas card featuring Sister Vaitohi and I posing with a Disney inspired Christmas tree.

On Monday we both got really freaked out because we come out of our
dinner to jump in the car and we notice something strange. There's a
full pack of Reese's peanut butter cups sitting in the front seat.
None of the doors had been left open, none of the windows were down,
and the car was locked the whole time. If this is the breaking into
car that Rocklin has, I'll take it. But really it did creep us out
cause we have no idea how they got there...

Miracle of the week happened on Tuesday. We were knocking some doors
trying to contact some less actives and potentials in the area and we
met someone! The less active family that lived there was no longer at
the address so we started talking to one of the guys that lives there
now! His name is Ryan and he is super open to learning about the
gospel. We shared with him a little bit and he started spouting off
questions to us about everything. We invited him to our ward Christmas
party that weekend and he came! Miracles happen through knocking doors
people! Sad story but I think we'll have to pass him off to the YSA
sisters because that's probably where he should go but still! Happy
 day!

I got to go out on splits with one of the laurels in the ward and it
was super fun. Her name is Emily and she is really pumped about
missionary work. It's super fun being in these wards where people are
dying to come out with us. They really get to see how us missionaries
roll. I'm grateful for all of those people who do take the time and
effort to come out with us. If you haven't been able to, try setting
some time aside to go out with the missionaries. It has really changed
my perspective on the way we share the gospel.

On Thursday I hit my six month mark! It has officially been over six
months since I've been able to give my family a hug. Ladies and gents
it's boggles my mind that I've made it to this point. I started off
that day by curling a woman named June's hair at one of the old folks
homes we go to. She was beaming and we got to talk all about
Christmas. It was awesome. Later that night we got to have a lesson
with Brother Mondell. It was touching to see how he's learning to rely
on strength besides his own. For so long he has developed the practice
of being extremely self reliant. Now that's not a bad thing at all,
but it is taking him some time to rely on the strength of the Savior's
Atonement for us, because we can be so much stronger that way than any
way we can come up with on our own. I've gotten to do a little bit of
thinking about the time when I was dealing with the brunt of my ankle
situation a few years ago. I consider myself to be a fairly
independent person who thinks they can do a lot on their own. But
through that trial I had to learn patience and trust, trust in that
Heavenly Father would one day make things better for me. I had to see
that since the Savior did it I can too. I learned that I couldn't do
it all on my own but that I had to rely on the Savior and those around
me who love me to buoy me up. It's really cool to see someone starting
to open up to that idea. I'm just waiting for the gradual lightbulb
moment that Brother Mondell is going to have, because I know that it
will come. He studies everyday and prays and repents and comes to
church and is so involved in his spiritual studies that there is no
way he will not be a member of the church in the next little while.

Friday and Saturday were the ward Christmas parties!! 5th Ward was on
Friday and 1st was on Saturday. We were able to invite a new
investigator named Ryan but he didn't stay for long. It was a good
 start though!

On Sunday we got to go down to the live nativity that they hold at the
Sacramento Temple!!! It was so cool. So they turn the area around the
temple into a Bethlehem look a like. It was a full on production. They
had He birth of the Savior and the shepherds and the wise men and
everything. A live baby too! But probably the most tender mercy ever
was to see some of my favorite people there. We were waiting in line
and who do I see walk up?! None other than Tammy and the Arnold family
and Sister Seely and Sister Frost from Antelope!!! I was cryin.

So transfers have come and I will be getting a Sister Smith down here!
Sister Vaitohi isn't going far, just to Lincoln (and she will be
living in our area anyways). I'm so excited!!!

 Love,
 Sister Thorum

TAMMY

FAMILY

Treat every day like Christmas (December 5, 2016)

Well the official Christmas countdown has begun!! Cannot WAIT until I
can see my fammmm jammmm on Christmas! I have my Christmas music
blaring in the car (missionary appropriate though), I have my fuzzy
socks on hand, and I have a pantry full of hot chocolate. Bring. It.
On.

So on Tuesday and Thursday I was up in Granite Bay on exchanges with
my girl Sister Singer. She and I are totally gonna hang after the
mish. We got to do a ton of service on Tuesday at some old folks homes
and a food distribution spot. Also, got to have Panera Bread for the
first time in like 6 months!! Speaking of six months, I'm gonna hit my
six month mark on the 8th of this month! So naturally I bought myself
a new nail polish color. It's the little things really. On Thursday we
got to drive through a neighborhood called Wexford Park. One word:
mansions. I felt like Cinderella driving through that place (me the
peasant girl showing up to the castle). That day we did a lot of
contacting and trying to invite less active people to the ward's
Christmas party and to the stake nativity event.  On Wednesday we
helped some older people in our stake in their Book of Mormon class.
They are studying Jacob 5 and going really in depth on all the
symbolism and everything in it. It's really cool to just trace the
Savior's love throughout it. Saturday was a doozie. We helped almost
all day at the stake nativity activity. They had the whole stake
center set up with nativities from all around the world. They also had
choirs from lots of different schools and churches perform throughout
the three days it was going on. We as missionaries got to sing too! We
sang a few hymns and were able to testify of our Savior in that way.
It was cool to see how many people were touched by it. There's
definitely a special spirit that comes with Christmas.

On Sunday night we got to go watch the First Presidency Christmas
devotional. That's where leaders of our church just give special
messages about the Savior and Christmas and the Mormon Tabernacle
Choir sings their guts out and it's just awesome. One of the main
things I caught was that Christ's whole life and His Atonement are His
gift to all of us. We don't just celebrate His birth at this time of
year; we celebrate His entire life. One of the speakers said that we
wouldn't have Christmas without Easter. If we didn't have the Savior's
Atonement, we wouldn't have a reason for the season. So celebrate Him
this year! Make a difference by finding little ways to serve those
around you. Fill the world with His light.

Little miracle: we're going to be able to teach both Brother and
Sister Mondell this coming Thursday!! I'm excited to help them both
get on similar pages. It'll help the family become more unified! They
are both so sincere and wonderful. I'm excited for the moment when it
clicks for both of them.

Hope y'all have a rockin' week,
Sister Thorum
